Please join us for this new, full feature 400 km route that is close to home for many in the region and might even visit your neighborhood! We will start and finish at the McMenamins Anderson School in Bothell, WA and travel to many wonderful spots south.

400 km rides are hard mentally due to riding ~20 - 27 hours with little to no sleep. Doubt can creep into your thinking. Feeling the effort of that first hard hill then wondering about all the other hills and kms ahead, you can question your fitness and decision making abilities. Weather, fatigue, mechanicals, terrain can conspire to reduce your will. Riding close to home, the idea of abandoning can grow loud in your head. In these moments remember this quote:

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me." - Frank Herbert, Dune

With this backdrop, the route was developed with a few concepts in mind:
  1. To honor Tacoma's Frank Herbert and his sci-fi masterpiece Dune, we will visit the new Dune Peninsula Park built in Tacoma at the site of a former smelter. For more information about the park see:
https://www.metroparkstacoma.org/why-did-we-name-it-dune-peninsula-at-point-defiance-park/. You'll learn that as a teenager, Frank had a randonneur streak in him. I'd like to think he'd approve of our human powered challenge through the region.
  2. We'll ride through heavy urban/industrial areas then head into the less impacted but still threatened Cascade foothills. In the quite moments, you can ponder the implications of our impacts on the planet - which is one of the themes in Dune as Frank Herbert was heavily influenced by the smelter and environmental destruction of Puget Sound he observed as a child.
  3. The route will let you experience the pleasures (& pain) of the major planetary forces that shape our region: Hills formed by ice age glaciers 1 mile thick; 200+ ft high lahar flows from Mt. Rainier; and shoreline hills carved by water erosion from the never-ending rain.
Fear not - you can do this!

Lunch: If ordered in advance, lunch/snack will be obtained from The Antique Sandwich Co. located in Ruston and will be provided at the Dune Peninsula Park Control. Please see their menu at the web link below and submit your lunch/snack request by Friday April 30 to Kevin (contact info below when logged in).
