The Three Volcanoes 300 circles through the wild country between Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. This year the route is updated to visit scenic Takhlakh Lake. The route has a total of 37km/23 mi of gravel. Riders shoud make their own lodging arrangements in Packwood.
For more details see this
blog post and Bill Gobie's
pre-ride report.
The start will be at the
76 Station at the corner of US-12 & Skate Creek Road. The finish will be at the
Hotel Packwood.
All riders must have front and rear lights, a reflective vest, and reflective ankle bands. Be prepared to show these to the ride organizer at the start.
Warnings
This is not your typical 300K route.
The Three Volcanoes route has historically been a strenuous ride, and this year's version lives up to its reputation. It is 313.6K (~194.9 miles) with 4,261 meters (~13,980 feet) elevation gain. It also features 36.9K (~22.9 miles) of gravel. The gravel varies from "hard packed and smoother than some chip-sealed asphalt" to "deep, soft, squishy, and riddled with washboard and potholes". The gravel descents are particularly gnarly.
Due to quirky ACP brevet rules the time limit is still 20 hours – there is no additional time for the "extra" 13.6K distance beyond 300K, nor is there any extra time for gravel. The minimum clock-time speed for this ride is about 15.7 KPH (~9.75 MPH).
Cell coverage along the route is spotty at best. There is zero coverage at Takhlakh Lake, good coverage at Trout Lake (and free WiFi at the general store), and only Verizon (no AT&T, etc) at Northwoods. It's best to assume zero coverage in all other areas.
All riders should make a go/no-go decision at the Takhlakh Lake control at 106.6K (~66.2 miles). Self-rescue beyond this point gets progressively more difficult.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40258450 is the suggested route to get back to the start from Takhlakh Lake via NF-23. It's 79.1K (~49.2 miles) with 10.9K (6.8 miles) of gravel. Returning via NF-21 is much shorter but almost all gravel and not recommended.
