Route Description
Pacific Northwest Coast 600 (Brevet Route #3003)
The route is a point-to-point from Centralia Washington, to the coast of southwest Washington and northwest Oregon along scenic coastal vistas of the old Pacific Coast Highway, and returns inland to Eugene Oregon. It is inspired by and reuses most of the 2021 Craters 1200K route along the coast, a lumpy mini-version without the awe inducing massive mountain climbs. Consider this a teaser.
We moved the start south down to Centralia at McMenimins for an historic experience of centuries past and a stones throw away from the Amtrak station. For some, the McMenimins website might entice you to arrive a little earlier in the day for one of those package deals. From Centralia, a modest railroad grade climb should wake up the legs before descending down into Raymond at the mouth of the Willapa River where the cool, temperate breezes provide onshore flow from the Pacific Ocean. From Raymond, we head south on US-101, WA-4, and WA-401 to the Astoria-Megler Bridge. We follow most of the Oregon's Pacific Coast Scenic Byway to soak in the sea breeze and ocean scenery. Once at Lincoln City, we'll call it a night.
Morning arrives on day 2 with a seemingly black and white portrait of Siletz Bay. If you for unexplainable reasons decide to ride through the night, you'll see mostly views of black perhaps with amplified ocean sounds and scents. For the rest of us wanderers, more awesome ocean views along lumpy terrain begins day two. From Florence, we turn east back inland on familiar roads to Willamette Randonneurs heading into and up the forested hills before descending down to the valley floor to Eugene. The 2021 Craters 1200K route continued to the next town of Reedsport, so we're only missing a short section of Oregon Coast and a nice steep climb, a.k.a. Camp Creek Road and there is that mountain that blew its top off... also missing.
The route is meant to be convenient for Amtrak transportation with the start and finish near the station. For those flying in, perhaps the best way to make this work is to establish a home base near one of the airports. Hotels will usually store the luggage for you if you ask. From there you can take the train like a local would. Perhaps Eugene would work best. There are many daily Amtrak trains from EUG to CTL with available $5 carry on bike service slots currently available (10 slots per train). For those who have never used Amtrak in this way, look forward to specific carry on bike service experience using the Amtrak Cascades Line in the pre-ride report.
Spotwalla Tracker
Gary Prince has set up an SIR SpotWalla club account for this event (optional to use). Riders may join
here (note: riders responsible for SpotWalla fees). Viewers may use the following link to
track joined riders.
Lighting and Reflectivity
Front and rear lights, a reflective vest, and reflective ankle bands are required. Be prepared to show these to the ride organizer at the start. Your lights should be on during any low-light conditions (rain storms, night, tunnels).
Food
Food and drinks will only be provided by the club at the overnight control. Food & services are noted on the route.
Drop Bag
We will have drop bag service at the start control, overnight control, and finish control. Consider using a volunteer friendly closed duffle bag or backpack. No luggage.
Logistics
Riders are responsible for making their own accommodation reservations. It is highly recommended to book fully refundable accommodations and Amtrak tickets early before the summer rush kicks into full gear.
