RUSA Populaire #2514
This is based on 1004 Lake Washington-Lake Sammamish Loop with the bottom part routed across Mercer Island and through Factoria (Factoria-Issaquah-Lake Forest Park-Seattle-Mercer Island-Factoria).
Tom Beck's Pre-Ride Notes
The route this year covers roads and trails you have probably ridden many times. It starts with a gentle climb of the hill from Factoria to Eastgate, but it's better this year after the completion of a new section of the Mountains to Sound Trail which takes you off the narrow shoulder of the roadway until you get to 142nd Pl SE (road to Bellevue College). (There are plans for a future expansion of the trail that will go along the south side of I-90 to SE Lakemont Blvd.) The route traverses briefly through a neighborhood. This section still had a bunch of snow on my first attempt at the pre-ride but is now completely clear. Once you turn left onto SE Newport Way, watch out for ice and debris on the roadway; some sections have a good shoulder but it's inconsistent. Be very careful of traffic in Issaquah because the timing of our event coincides with holiday shoppers. Once you're on the East Lake Sammamish Trail (ELST), it's smooth sailing for a while. The park in Woodinville is a good place to stop to replenish water bottles and use the facilities. After passing University of Washington and Montlake Bridge, there’s a left turn soon after crossing over 520 that might be confusing. Cross over Lake Washington Blvd E then take an immediate left onto narrow E North St. The rest of the route is routine but the loop around Mercer Island is always a joy, especially the switchbacks and gentle curves on the east side. Finish the ride by going OVER the traffic in Factoria rather than through it using the somewhat recently finished Mountains to Sound Trail.
