Route Description

RUSA Route #3196 "Warm Up 200K"

Mark Thomas's Ride Notes from 2023

The route starts out on the Cross Kirkland Corridor trail and uses the recently opened (and beautiful) Totem Lake Connector bridge. Shortly after that, there is an awkward exit from the trail onto 132nd Ave NE. The trail ends at a fence - the safest plan is to follow the signs to go down the sidewalk to the right and use the crosswalk just north of NE 124th St to get to the other side of 132nd Ave NE and then turn left (north) up the first climb. Be cautious on the descent towards the wineries, there are tracks near the bottom of the road before a left turn.

There are ugly RR tracks entering downtown Woodinville on NE 175th St, but there are some helpful markings to guide a safe crossing. A climb up from Woodinville leads to the usual route to Snohomish and the Centennial Trail. The route exits the trail earlier than many of our routes, turning at the intersection right after the trail goes under SR-92. A nice road that we don’t usually use goes up to Getchell/84th, which can be busy and caution should be taken when making the left from this road to Goebel Hill and the first info control.

Although there is no control in Granite Falls, there are plenty of services available before heading south on Robe Menzel Road toward Lake Roesiger. The Lake Roesiger stare is a control and has drinks and ice cream and Poppy the puppy. From the store, it’s pretty familiar roads through Monroe and Carnation. There’s no control in Carnation, but Sandy’s Espresso is always a welcome stop and a nice chance to refuel before the route starts to get a little bit mean, with 15m/km of climbing over the last third of the brevet. Tolt Hill is lovely, but hardly the easiest route to Fall City, where the control is at a very nice coffee shop.

After Fall City, the route takes Issaquah-Fall City Road up to Issaquah Highlands before descending into Issaquah on bike trail. After transiting Issaquah, the route goes up Cougar Mountain through the Montreux neighborhood. This is by far the most challenging bit of the ride, but the streets are wide and not busy and the views from the top are glorious. The route returns up West Lake Sammamish before the last climb into Kirkland. The first pitch of this climb (on NE 51st) is steep, but the rest is gradual and followed by a descent to Chainline Brewing for some much deserved refreshment.

Hope to see many of you there. Non-riders are welcome to come greet the finishers at Chainline.
