Come celebrate the 30th anniversary of SIR's first 300K brevet!

The first 300K SIR brevet took place May 15, 1994. It started from Clinton at the ferry terminal on Whidbey Island; went up Whidbey Island, crossed over Deception Pass, then came down Route 9 (this was pre-Centennial Trail) finishing in Mukilteo near the ferry terminal. 26 riders started, including a few familiar names:
  • Mark Roberts
  • Ken Krichman
  • Duane Wright
  • Ron Himshoot

Route Description

RUSA Route #2968 "Centenary 300K Brevet"

This year's ride starts at the Clinton Park & Ride. We head to Langley and work our way around the island to Oak Harbor, the Naval Air Station, over Deception Pass, around the Swiomish Reservation and then familiar roads around Sedro Wooley, Mount Vernon and Arlington to end in Mukilteo at the Silver Cloud Hotel.

Jan Acuff and Thai Nguyen Ride Notes from 2023

  • Word of caution on Whidbey – there is loose gravel on Satterlee Road and after Deception Pass, getting on Deception Pass (mile 69.7, ~112.2K) construction work with a deep gravel pit across the road on descent – REMINDER – a few miles after the Deception Pass bridge can be very busy on the weekends – stay to the right and be patient with drivers
  • Alger Cain (Lake) Road (about mile 105-110) there is new oil/tar and chip seal being laid down. There may be long lines of cars and trucks to get through. Hopefully the road will be tamed down of traffic by the weekend, but there may be loose gravel on the edge of the road
  • Mile 133.6 – like the Spring 600k get on trail at Gardner Road – this cuts the gravelly part starting at Peterson Anderson Road
  • Mile 136 – like the Spring 600k on the return through Mt Vernon. Left on Whitmarsh Road is preferred
  • On the Scenic Heights Road before getting to Oak Harbor there are concrete barriers with road closed sign, but it is easy to get around – so don’t go bombing down the hill
  • There is usually a lot of traffic on Highway 9 – busy from Sedro Woolly to Mt. Vernon – stay to the right and be patient with cars
  • If you don’t want to stop in LaConner – on the Swinomish reservation you can go about 2 blocks off course to the bathroom at the park and then a block over to the Chevron Station.
  • Finish is at The Silver Cloud Hotel Lobby – NO BIKES IN THE LOBBY

Parking

Unless you live on Whidbey Island you'll want to park on the Mukilteo side.

There is free parking south of 1st St, just across the street from the ferry toll booths.

There's also a long-term parking lot (up to 72 hours) across Front Street from the Silver Cloud Hotel and Ivar's. It's ~300 meters from the parking lot to the ferry toll booths.

NOTE: Most other lots in this area are limited to four hours maximum and most are signed "no overnight parking". If you choose to park elsewhere, choose carefully. Nobody wants to finish a 300K only to find their vehicle has been towed.

On-street Parking

There is limited street parking around the YMCA (10601 47th Pl W, Mukilteo, WA), south of Harbour Pointe Blvd. It will be 4 miles downhill to the ferry.

Start

Clinton Park & Ride (behind the post office)
4801 Deer Lake Rd
Clinton, WA 98236

Plan on catching the 6:00 AM Mukilteo-to-Clinton ferry. We will check-in riders (including safety check) prior to boarding the ferry. Get your brevet card from the organizer, then a volunteer will perform the safety check and mark your card. When you arrive in Clinton, ride ~1K up the road from the ferry to the Clinton P&R, on the left. The organizer will start the ride once everyone has assembled there.

The start time is 6:30 AM to align with the recommended 6:00 AM ferry sailing time. If you miss the 6:00 AM ferry the next one is at 7:00 AM which means you would start the ride one hour late.

Pre-buying tickets online (for you AND your bike) directly from WSDOT will save a little pre-6:00 AM hassle.

Finish

Silver Cloud Hotel - Mukilteo Waterfront
718 Front St
Mukilteo, WA 98275
